Life is a Highway

Starting today, life is a highway for me. Okay, more like a lot of country back-roads mixed with country highways, with a touch of the "big" highways every now and then. See, today is my first day of what is known around our office as "fall travel."

"Fall travel" finds us Admissions Counselors hitting the road visiting high schools and college fairs in a variety of places. Today found me at 3 high schools that are fairly local to Bluffton.

And just in case you don't believe me, here are my cell phone shots to prove it:

My first stop of fall travel brought me to Ottawa-Glandorf High School. Here's Ryan (who has an interest in Business) and Meghan (with an interest in Music Ed).

Go Titans! Gotta love Ottawa. And I'll give you 2 reasons why:

First, their colors are blue and gold. So were my high school colors. (Albeit mine was more of a royal blue instead of their navy blue; but hey, for camaraderie's sake, let's just say I wore blue and gold, too, okay.) Good style O-G.

And second, my family does our grocery shopping in Ottawa. (Hey, I'm not biting the hand that feeds me, alright.)

Next...

McComb High School.

2 reasons I like McComb (besides the 3 kind students I met with today and forgot to photograph!!):

First, they know community. Whenever I go to their senior awards at the end of the year, it feels like there's a sense of community in that place. I like that.

And second, their football press box sits about a mile high in the air, held up by something like 2 glorified black iron outdoor basketball poles. I'm not stepping foot in that thing. But, hey, it's probably safe, so nice engineering McComb.

And lastly...

Meet Treg (left) and Ben (right). Both from North Baltimore High. Good guys. Treg plays football and basketball, and Ben has interest in going into forestry. Good stuff.

Now, here are my 2 reasons for liking North Baltimore:

First, it's an old building. I like that. I like old. I'm not being sarcastic. New building are nice and all, but give me a little history. I like the wooden frames on classroom doors. I like the black-iron stairwells. I like the knicked-up, glossed-over wooden floors - the kind that if you look close enough you might just see some 1950's Chuck Taylor imprints. I like those kind of schools. And North Baltimore is holding down the fort when it comes to vintage hallways.

Secondly, while talking with Treg and Ben, I found out that they play Danbury High School. Because I wasn't sure - or didn't hear them - I looked it up online and found that they play them in football. That's like an hour and a half drive! Whoever can travel that far, get off the bus and play some high school football, deserves some respect. You got mine North Baltimore.

Well, that was my first day of "fall travel," along with two reasons that I like each of these schools. Good times. Looking forward to the rest.
