Hi all! This is Andy writing. I am an out-of-state Admissions Counselor. I cover the states of Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Virginia--so if you are from one of these states, I might be the one calling/contacting you from Bluffton. Hello in advance!
I am new to the Bluffton University Admissions Office; however, I am not new to Bluffton University. I recently graduated in May from Bluffton. During my time at Bluffton as an undergraduate student, I was heavily involved in student organizations, activities on campus, and working both in the Career Development Center as a student assistant and working as a tutor for the Learning Resource Center.
It doesn't seem like it was all that long ago that I was searching for "the right college" for me. After visiting a couple of schools (including Bluffton) and talking with faculty, staff, and/or alumni from them, I still was not able to narrow my college search as both colleges were great. It wasn't until spending the night at Bluffton in one of the residence halls that I was able to make up my mind. If it wasn't for my overnight visit, I may never have chosen to attend Bluffton. My advice for you is to tour the colleges you are serious about. Once you have visited/toured them, set up an overnight visit. Academics are important, but so is student life as your college will be your home away from home for four years or so. An overnight visit can help you get a glimpse of what student life is like at that particular college.
As you can tell by my previous statements, the community life at Bluffton is great; it allows someone to get involved and stay involved. Through my involvement in all of the organizations, activities, and events that I participated in, I was able to form life-long friendships. When you are looking at colleges to attend, see what their student life is like (i.e. what is there for you to participate?) At Bluffton, we currently have over 40 student organizations. And if we don't have the one for you, you can start it, such as the Ultimate Frisbee Club, which was started by Admissions Counselor Lucas Vaas when he was a student here at Bluffton.
So to some up my advice: Stay overnight at the colleges you are serious about and find out which organizations, activities, and events are prevalent on campus for you to participate.
